BAHRAIN PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION LAW – FAQ
1. What is the Personal Data Protection Law?
The Personal Data Protection Law (the “PDPL”) is a new data privacy law introduced in Bahrain to provide individuals with new rights and greater control over the data organisations hold on you. The PDPL came into force on 1 August 2019.
2. Why is the PDPL important?
The PDPL is a really positive step towards you having more control over how your data is used and how NBB and you communicate with each other. The changes will also help to better protect your personal data.
The new PDPL makes sure that all organisations are set up to protect any personal data they hold, and to have systems and internal controls in place to protect it.
3. What are my rights under the PDPL?
It's your right to control how we use your personal information. The new PDPL supports your right to have your privacy respected and your data protected. It gives you easier access to the personal information organisations hold about you, if you wish to check or update it.
It is designed to give you confidence that this information is accurate, up to date and well managed. It's the bank’s responsibility to make sure we handle any data you share with us fairly, lawfully and securely. That's why, in line with the PDPL, we are updating our processes and controls to make sure we continue to safeguard your information and meet all the PDPL requirements.
4. How is NBB collecting my consent for communicating with me?
Under the PDPL, NBB has the obligation to collect your consent to document the ways we communicate with each other. To that effect, NBB is using its ATM network to collect your consent in a more efficient “green” way that allows us to register your consent electronically. This is part of our commitment to digitize our services.
With your consent NBB will continue communicating with you via SMS to provide you with relevant information about NBB products and services.
5. What happens if I choose the ‘I HEREBY GIVE MY CONSENT’ option on the ATM machine?
If you choose the ‘I HEREBY GIVE MY CONSENT’ option, you give us your consent. With your consent in place NBB you will continue communicating about NBB’s existing products and services, together with direct marketing messages to let you know about new products and services, rewards, special offers and much more. Once you agree, that’s all you need to do and you will not see that ATM notification again. Thank you for your cooperation!
6. What happens if I choose the ‘I WILL DO THIS LATER’ option on the ATM machine?
If you choose ‘I WILL DO THIS LATER’ option, it means that you can give your consent at any time no later than 29 February 2020. You will continue seeing the ATM notification until you give your consent. The sooner you click on the ‘I HEREBY GIVE MY CONSENT’ option, the better. Once you give your consent that’s all you need to do and you will not see the ATM notification again. Thanks for your cooperation!
7. How do I update my personal information and/or preferences?
