Manama – 13 June 2018: The Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning (MOW) his Excellency Eng. Essam bin Abdulla Khalaf signed an agreement with National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) Chairman Mr. Farouk  Yousif Almoayyed, for the supervision of construction for the Multiple Sclerosis Center at Muharraq Medical Center. The signing took place  in the presence of the Minister of Health Her Excellency Ms. Faeqa Alsaleh, the Undersecretary of Public Works Affairs Eng. Ahmed Al Khayat, the Assistant Under-Secretary for Hospital Affairs Dr. Mohammed Al Awadi, the Assistant Under-Secretary for building and maintenance projects Shaikh Mashaal bin Mohammed Al Khalifa and CEO of NBB Mr. Jean Christophe Durand.

Under the agreement, MOW will supervise the construction of the Multiple Sclerosis Center project, which is fully financed by NBB on behalf of  the Ministry of Health at an estimated cost of BD 1.7 MM.

Commenting, The Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning, His Excellency Eng. Essam bin Abdulla Khalaf said, “This project comes in line with His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa’s directives  to implement the master plan of Muharraq Medical Center in order to deliver better health services. The Center consists of a Multiple Sclerosis facility, long-stay care center with a 100 bed capacity (implementation agreement signed last week), maternity hospital with 85 beds  and a care center for the elderly.

He added, “We thank NBB for their generous donation covering all the expenses of the Multiple Sclerosis Center, we also appreciate NBB’s broad based support for numerous public-sector projects, especially in the health sector. The Multiple Sclerosis Center will contribute significantly to the enhanced delivery of health services in terms of improved treatments, easier medical checks and  lower costs,”,

Further commenting, the Minister said, “The development of the Multiple Sclerosis Center comes at a crucial time where the numbers of patients are increasing tangibly across the GCC region, where there have been 400 cases of multiple sclerosis reported since 1990’s. This Center, which will be established in Muharraq, will be the second of its kind in the region following the first, which is  located in KSA.”

“NBB signed a deal with Eng. Adel Ahmadi for the project oversight and design and the center will be built on 800 sq metres. We hope to complete the constructions of the center by mid-2020,” concluded His Excellency Eng. Essam bin Abdulla Khalaf, Minister of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning.

On this occasion, Mr. Farouk Khalil Yousif Almaoyyaed, NBB Chairman commented: "We are delighted to sign this important agreement, which will serve many patients and support government efforts towards providing the best medical services to all Bahrainis. We at NBB are fully committed to helping in the realisation of important governmental projects, which target the enhanced well fare of all citizens in line with the Bank’s donation and contribution program."
